There is e there are con le preposizioni di luogo

Vai alle 4 domandeQuando vogliamo dire che qualcosa si trova in un posto, in inglese usiamo l'espressione "there is" se parliamo di una sola cosa. Per esempio: "There is a bed in my room", cioè "C'è un letto nella mia camera". Usiamo invece "there are" quando le cose sono due o più: "There are two chairs in the kitchen", cioè "Ci sono due sedie in cucina". Dopo "there is" mettiamo un nome al singolare, dopo "there are" un nome al plurale, come "books", "toys" o "pencils".
Possiamo dire: "There is a sofa in the living room" e "There are three windows in the kitchen". Quando elenchiamo cose diverse, la frase può cominciare con "there is" se la prima cosa è una sola: "There is a table and two chairs". Se invece la prima cosa elencata è plurale, si usa "there are": "There are two chairs and a table".
"In" significa dentro: "The pencil is in the box". "On" significa sopra, appoggiato: "The book is on the table". "Under" significa sotto: "The cat is under the chair". "Next to" significa accanto: "The lamp is next to the bed". "Behind" significa dietro: "The ball is behind the door". "Between" significa in mezzo a due cose: "The bag is between the desk and the wardrobe". There is a cat under the table".
Si aggiunge "not" e si ottiene "there is not", abbreviato in "there isn't", oppure "there are not", abbreviato in "there aren't". Per esempio: "There isn't a TV in my bedroom" significa "Non c'è la televisione nella mia camera". "There aren't any chairs in the garden" significa "Non ci sono sedie in giardino".
Diciamo: "Is there a lamp on the desk?" e "Are there any books under the bed?". Le risposte brevi sono "Yes, there is" e "No, there isn't" per il singolare, "Yes, there are" e "No, there aren't" per il plurale. Se vogliamo sapere quante cose ci sono, possiamo chiedere "How many chairs are there?" e rispondere con un numero: "There are four".
